Mees graduated from the Academy of Ghent in 1920. In the 1940s, he mainly painted expressionistically with monumental figures and structured landscapes. From the 1950s onwards, his work became more abstract. Around 1967, his style changed with a preference for pure surfaces and a sterile line work. His distinctive colour palette, however, remained. He often set off bright colours against a darker background, which makes his works flamboyant.
He was one of the founders of the SMAK. He was also a co-founder of the Museum Dhondt - Dhaenens (1967).
